If you are moving overseas, you may wish to take your car with you. Our guide can help you with shipping your car overseas during an international move.

    International Car Shipping Guide
If you're preparing for an international move and would like to bring your car with you, there are a few important things you will need to consider first. It may be a viable option for you to ship your car overseas, but that will depend on the destination of your move.

    Driving Permits

If you plan to ship your car overseas to use in your destination country, find out about getting an international driving permit (IDP).

Research what type of permit you will need for the country you are moving to. Some countries will allow you to use your current license.

What will I need to apply for an IDP?

    • Full valid GB or Northern Ireland driving license
    • A passport photograph
    • Valid passport as proof of ID
    • Application fee of £5.50

    Public transport

The first point to consider when preparing to move overseas is do you really need to bring your car?
Research the local transport in the area you're moving to before you go. Public transport in the UK is not representative of other countries. Many places have extremely efficient tram and train services that would mean that there would be no need for a car.

    How are cars shipped overseas?

If you decide you want to take your car with you overseas, weigh up the costs of shipping before you go. Depending on your destination, it could be cheaper to sell your current car and purchase a new one after you have moved.

There are two main shipping options:

    Container shipping

If cars are more expensive at your destination, the most common method used to transport vehicles overseas is container shipping. It is the more expensive option than Roll-on Roll-off shipping, but it can offer increased security.

You may be able to share a container with another vehicle to save money. It may also be worth looking into shipping your car with your household items at the same time to save costs.
Discuss this with your international removals company if it is something you are considering.

    Roll-on Roll off (Ro-Ro)

Alternatively, you can also use Roll-on Roll-off services, where you drive your car onto a boat and proceed through the customs and quarantine channels yourself.

This can be a less expensive option, but there can be restrictions with this shipping option, so it is important to research if this is available for your destination country and if there are regulations you will need to follow.

For example, depending on where you will be shipping your vehicle, you will not usually be able to ship any other belongings using this method as they will not be covered and insured.

Some countries will only allow you to import your car if you have owned and used it for a minimum of 12 months. It is important to do your research before your move.

The shipping company you use should provide you with the most up-to-date information regarding import permits.

    Export paperwork

Shipping your car on a temporary export

If you are planning to take your vehicle abroad for less than a year, then you must ensure you have your registration certificate (V5C) on your person.

As a UK registered vehicle your car will still be subject to UK law while you are away, so you will need to maintain your UK road tax and have valid UK MOT and insurance certificates for UK roads.

Shipping your car on a permanent export

If you plan to export your vehicle for 12 months of more, you will need to notify the DVLA. You will also need to complete and return the section 'Notification of Permanent Export' from your V5C registration document.

Customs for shipping your car abroad

It is always recommended that your car is thoroughly cleaned prior to shipment, as some countries will subject your vehicle to strict quarantine inspections upon arrival.

When shipping your car internationally from the UK, customs requirements vary from country to country, so always investigate local rules and regulations before you ship your car.

JCL were really helpful organising and moving my stuff from Netherlands to UK. Mark was knowledgeable about all the customs documents. They were able to organise transport at late notice. The driver was friendly, his truck was tidy and nothing was broken during transit. I highly recommend JCL.
