St Leonard’s Tower, a Norman Keep, is one of West Malling’s most notable historical buildings. The tower was built between 1077 and 1108 by Bishop Gundolf, a famous Norman builder who also constructed the White Tower of the Tower of London, Rochester Cathedral and a number of castles. St Leonard’s Tower is situated next to Manor Park Country Park, West Malling’s largest outdoor public space. This Green Flag award winning park is complete with its own lake which acts as a sanctuary for many local birds, including mallard ducks, swans and moorhens. Alongside Manor Park, West Malling, being a small rural town, has an abundance of stunning countryside on its door step. A short distance west of West Malling stands Coldrum Long Barrow. The barrow was constructed during Britain’s early Neolithic period some 4,000 years ago, shortly after farming was introduced from Europe. As the Barrow is even older than Stonehenge and is situated within a lovely stretch of Kentish countryside, it is certainly worth a visit.
